Why is river Godawari known as the old Ganga of the South?

Godavary is one of the major easterly flowing river of the peninsular India, very like the river Ganga. It has two holy cities located on its banks. These are Nashik and Paithan in Maharashtra. The city of Nashik is supposed to be the residence of ShriRam, Sita and Laxman during their Vanvas or exile in the forests (Panchawati). Kumbha Mela is held in this city and on the banks of the river Godavari every 10 years. Thus the river Godavari is equated with holy river Ganga of north and is designated as the Ganga of south. The city of Paithan is an ancient pilgrimage town on the banks or the river Godavari. This town finds mention in the ancient Greek literature. For all these reasons, the river Godvari is known as the Ganga of south.
Ca lling it as Old Ganga may have something to do with its origin. The Peninsular India was a part of the Gondawana continent which drifted northwards and collided with the Eurasian continent thereby creating the Himalayan ranges around 10 crore years back. The river Godavri could have been in existence then. The present day Ganga of north originated after the creation of the Himalayan ranges and is thus younger than the river Godavari. This is my surmise and is definitely debatable.
