Why is silver chromate red?

Most probably the reason for the red color of silver chromate is the first electric dipole allowed chromate transission shifts about 5000 cm to 1.

molecules absorb different frequencies of visible light and the rest of the frequencies are transmitted, which is the colour you see.  Therefore it appears red
