Skating is possible due to almost no friction and pressure put on ice for skating. As the skaters put on usually skate blade which has plane below surface providing almost no friction also the surface of ice acts as a lubricant reducing the friction to move on.
A skater put pressure on skate blades to move on over the ice and since there is almost no friction present between ice surface and skate blades, skater gain speed from a little push. As the pressure increases on ice temperature rises so the ice melts rapidly beneath skate blades which results in increasing speed.
