Answer :

Sodium means Na and Potassium mean k are very reactive metals. On coming in direct contact with atmospheric oxygen , they undergo fast combustion releasing a lot amount of heat energy.

This explosion of the metals can cause severe damage and that's the reason such metals are kept in kerosene.
