why is sodium hydrogen carbonate and essential ingradiant in antacid

Antacids are used when a person suffers from acidity ie. level of HCl rises in stomach which is an acid and antacids consists bases to neutral the acid level . Sodium hydrogen carbonate is nature wise a base and hence an essential ingredient of an antacid.
