Soil erosion is less in dense forest because there are a lot of tress whose roots grow deep inside the soil and protect it from being eroded during heavy rainfall whereas in barren lands there is scarcity of tress due to which there is nothing protecting the soil, hence the soils is loose and gets eroded away easily in heavy rains

Plant roots firmly bind the soil. In the absence of plants , soil becomes loose . So it can be moved by wind and flowing water.
