Solar cells are not used to meet our energy needs because there size are too small and they produce a negligible amount to electricity for or electrical appliances like washing machine,cooler,AC,etc..... So a group of solar cells are used to make a solar panel by which we produce enough amount of electricity.....

Hope this helps you, Have a nice day.....

Answer:

when photons hit the photo-voltaic cells, it generates electricity. But only 10% of the photons that hits the photo-voltaic cells generates electricity and the rest of the photons get reflected back, so very low-efficiency. Moreover it is unreliable as the light intensity differs in different place and there is no electricity being generated at night. The cost for installing solar panels are really expensive. Which is why it is not used to meet our energy needs.
