Sound waves in air (and any fluid medium) are longitudinal waves because particles of the medium through which the sound is transported vibrate parallel to the direction that the sound wave moves.

Sound waves are considered as longitudnal waves because the particles of the medium move parallel to the wave's direction of travel. Sound waves are characterized by areas of high and low densities in the medium, called compressions and rarefactions.
