Why is South Asia is called a sub continent? Plz give short answer

Why is South Asia called a subcontinent? It is because of it's geography, the Indian plate is separated from rest of Asia by Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountain ranges in north and is bounded on West by Arabian sea, on east by bay of Bengal, and in south by Indian ocean.
