High compared to what? If you’re using the idea that Asia is cheap, it is to an extent in southeast Asia or even in parts of China—but Japan is still more expensive than South Korea is. Nor is South Korea so pricey compared to England or Canada or many western nations.

But I do differ with the other answers here in agreeing that living costs are steadily rising in South Korea. When I first came here in 2003, I made about US$2,000 a month, which was a very nice wage at the time. That’s no longer the case, and South Korea isn’t anymore a place for foreign teachers to cash in, as wages haven’t ris

What are the cheapest Korean cities to live in?

Is life hard in South Korea?

The cost of living in major cities is high. Seoul is the most expensive city to live in in Korea, and frankly, most of that is connected to housing.

Outside of Seoul, cost of living is reasonable and much cheaper than most places in the U.S.

Now some people might mention the price of education being another reason why Korea mostly Seoul) is expensive. The cost of university is cheaper than the U.S., and educating a child only becomes expensive if you regularly send your kids to academies after school.

Some folks might mention the price of food (especially fruits and meats). Well, imported food is bound to be more expensive than lovally grown food, especially in department stores. If you're willing to eat locally grown produce in season, it becomes cheaper. Also, shopping at traditional markets versus grocery stores is cheaper.

Now when it comes to goods such as electronics, it gets a little trickier. Companies such as LG and Samsung have the home grown advantage in Korea, and many Koreans practice brand loyalty. On top of that, Korean companies tend to lobby for protectionist legislation to protect their industries from foreign competition, resulting in either limited competition from other Korean brands or monopolies. The result is that Samsung products and the like tend to be more expensive in Korea than in other countries. However, I will say that customer service here is top notch, especially for Samsung, and service/repair centers are far more efficient and effective here than in the States.

Other than that, I’d say Korea can be a cheaper place to live than some countries depending on your spending habits.
