Why is space left between the railway tracks?

Railway tracks are made up of steel. During extremes of temperature they relax and contract due to thermal expansion, thus to prevent the breaking of tracks gaps are left in between the tracks.

so that there is enough margin to the tracks to expand and contract due to the temperature changes.if that gap is not left then the tracks might have enormous stress in while them due to expanding heat
