sponge is not a pure solid, it's a combination of gas in solid, it's solid bcoz it has strong inter molecular force btw molecules but can b compressed bcoz of it's air filled poures throughout

it has pores in which air is trapped.
when we apply pressure, these trapped air is expelled from it and thus the size is reduced.
