Why is sponge solid,though compressible ?

in sponge very small hole are presents in which air is full when we compress it the air is come out from sponge

Sponge is solid though compressible because small pores are present in it which allows the gas to pass through it so when we conpress it compressed but it has a definite shape and volume therefore it's considered as solid...
