Why is sulphuric acid added to nitric acid to prepare nitrating mixture?

Sulfuric acid takes no part in the reaction. Its only function is to take up the water produced by the nitration, which would otherwise dilute the nitric acid and stop the reaction. It is this dehydration that is responsible for the reaction being so exothermic.
