It is pure or concentrated sulphuric acid that is a useful drying agent. Since it contains no water and is a strong acid it reacts vigorously with any water to form hydroxonium ions:
H2SO4 + H2O → H3O+ + HSO4-
so the reaction removes water.

Sulphuric acid is a highly hygroscopic acid and hydrogen chloride gas is also an acid, so there is no chance of reaction between hydrogen chloride gas and sulphuric acid. Thus conc. sulphuric acid dries HCl gas without chemically reacting with it. So it is used.
