Why is tartaric acid added to baking soda in the preparation of baking powder?

Baking soda is not directly used in the food items bcoz it is basic in nature and it's taste becomes bitter if we add it in food item then food items will be bitter in taste we add tartaric acid to neutralize the effect of base ,after we make food items .it will be heated and produces co2 to food items ,the particles of baking soda is fastened with the particles of food items and make them spongy
