This type of landscaping, therefore, is called terracing. Graduated terracesteps are commonly used to farm on hilly or mountainous terrain. Terracedfields decrease both erosion and surface runoff, and may be used to support growing crops that require irrigation, such as rice.

Terracing is used in Southeast Asian agriculture in order to make land more level or flat for farming .
Due to steeply landscape especially in mountainous regions and plateaus, the land could not hold water and other things. So to avoid the problem the steeply land is cut into series of successive steps which is known as terracing.
