When you add an acid, which will dissociate into ions (or any soluble ionic compound) to water you are providing charge-carriers.
The ions move towards the oppositely charged electrode where they gain or lose electrons to/from the electrode thus 'completing the circuit'.
Electrons, as such, do not flow through the liquid - it is the ions that move.
