Here there is no reference to any book or story or name of any author who had compared between love with selfishness. So the question is incomplete and here a general interpretation of this answer shall be made between love and selfishness.
We should be able to love ourselves as well as others without being selfish to get back anything in return. That would be termed as true love. If we are selfish towards someone or something or wait for our love to be reciprocated, then we would not be able to love well as we would also be in wait to get something back in return.
However in true love, we do not expect to get back anything in return and it is not at all selfish.
