Why is the baking soda used in the preparation of cake ,biscuit ,dhokala? what does happen exactly ?

when baking soda is heated carbon dioxide gas is released which helps to make dhokla , cake etc fluffy and spongy. by the way baking POWDER is used in cake not baking soda
