Answer:

The base of the skiboard is made broad to reduce the pressure applied on the snow.

Explanation:

When the skiers use the sky board they are applying pressure on the snow through the skiboard. We know as the pressure increases temperature also increases and this temperature will melt the snow helping the skiers to glide over the snow.

If the pressure applied to the snow exceeds a certain limit the temperature thus produced will melt lots of snow and the skiers will sink. So in order to maintain the temperature to a certain limit, we need to reduce the pressure. Since pressure is inversely proportional to the area we increase the area of the board by making it broader. This increased area will reduce the pressure applied by the board on the snow.

They are broad to avoid sinking.

  • The board is usually wide to relieve pressure and allow the skier to glide rather than sink into it.
  • The skis must ride on a layer of water created by friction between the base and edges as they cut through the snow.
  • On cold snow, the base must be as smooth as possible to reduce the number of points of friction.
  • The objective in warm, wet snow is to transfer the water away from the base and decrease suction, whereas a board's base is broad and the key is to flow water out effectively.
