because during that battle only he realized that how many people were dead in war uselessly and then only he realized to stop wars and he became a Buddhist.

Many people including saints, monks etc died during Kalinga war and others lost their loved ones. Ashoka was sad for killing many innocent people that so he became a Buddist and thus, his life changed.
