Bhabar region
It is a Narrow belt of Northern Plains covered with pebbles lies along the foothills of Shiwaliks from Indus to Teesta .
The vast Northern plains also have diverse relief features. Accordingly they are divided into 4 regions –
- The rivers, after descending from the mountains deposit pebbles in a narrow belt of about 8 to 16km in width lying parallel to south of Shiwaliks known as ‘Bhabar’. All streams disappear in this belt.
- South of Bhabar belt, the streams and rivers re-emerge & create a wet, swampy, marshy region known as ‘Terai.’ It was thickly forested region, full of wild life. But now, the forests have been cleared to create agricultural land& to settle immigrants from Pakistan after partition.
- The largest part of the northern plain is formed of older alluvium. They lie above the flood plains of rivers and present a terrace like feature known as Bhangar. The soil in this region contains calcareous deposits locally known as ‘kankar.’
- The newer, younger deposits of Alluvial-soil on these flood plains are called Khadar. Soil is fertile & ideal for Intensive Agriculture.
