Mucilage protects the plant body from decay underwater.
Plants which grow on water is called hydrophytes or aquatic plants.
In aquatic plants entire body is covered with mucilage.
Mucilage is thick glue like substance made up of protein, polysaccharides and uranides. It does not dissolve in water it swells.
