friend it is because when British came and ruled India they took all gold, diamonds and everything of India they didn't even spared a single thing. they made there own lawns and governing the country took place from 1858 to 1947 and they did it on their own.
so the British referred this period to be colonial.

Colony means A country ruling the other small country and using their wealth..
British was actually doing this that is why they called it colonial.
