Why is the bulb of thermometer cylindrical?

A simple thermometer works on the principle that for all liquids a change in temperature results in increase in volume. That is why the mercury in the tube rises and falls depending on the contact temperature. The shape of the tube is thin and cylindrical in shape in order to increase that effect
