Addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen or loss of electrons is known as oxidation.

Conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid involves two steps.First step includes formation of ethanal,in which removal of hydrogen from ethanol takes place.

And in second step, ethanal is converted into ethanoic acid, which involves addition of oxygen. Thus this is oxidation reaction.

The molecular formula for ethanol :

CH3-CH2-OH

The molecular formula for ethanoic acid:

CH3-COOH

Now let's see the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid.

As you can see in first step a H2 molecule is removed from ethanol to form ethanal. As loss of Hydrogen is oxidation so, the reaction is an oxidation reaction.

Similarly, in second step a Oxygen atom is added to form ethanoic acid from ethanal. As, gain of Oxygen is called oxidation so, the reaction is an oxidation reaction.

From the above it is clear that, the conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid is a oxidation reaction .
