Why is the conversion of Ethanol to ethanoic acid an Oxidation reaction

Because oxidation is a reaction in which a substance gives oxygen to form new oxygen compound. And in the process of formation of ethanoic acid to ethanol a nascent oxygen atom is added to ethanol by alkaline potassium permanganate or acidified KMnO4 to form ethanoic acid.
CH2H5OH + 2(O) ------------- CH3COOH + H2O
