Why is the convex mirror called as the diverging mirror?

It is because the light rays when get reflected from the mirror appear to be diverging from a point behind the mirror therefore, a convex mirror is called the diverging mirror.

EXPLANATION:  

When parallel rays of light is incident on a ‘convex mirror’, then rays of light gets reflected from a point. The rays of light diverge from a point behind the mirror which is behind the mirror. Hence the image formed is diminished to a point, virtual.  

The image can never be produced on a screen. Since the image gets diverged from a point the mirror is known as diverging mirror.
