It is so because in a monopolistic competition, the consumer can always find cheaper alternatives to satisfy his wants. He can postpone the use of the good and the good's purchase is more elastic. But in a monopoly, there is only one seller. He cannot find alternatives. Hence curve is more elastic than monopoly.
