Why is the development of extra embryonic membrane is necessary in amniotes?

In birds and most reptiles, theembryo with itsextraembryonic membranesdevelops within a shelled egg. The amnion protects theembryo in a sac filled withamniotic fluid. The yolk sac contains yolk — the sole source of food until hatching.
