Distance between stars is not just any ordinary distance if calculate such distance in metres or kilometers we would get the answer in millions which is not convenient so by light year we get less and accurate distance

The distance between stars and earth and among the stars is not that small to be measured in metres or kilometres. It is inconvenient to do so as it is very large, even beyond our imagination. So these distances are expressed in light years or 'ly' which means the distance travelled by light in 1 year. 1 ly = 9.46× 10^2 km. The distance of a star from the earth is 8 ly which means distance is 8×9.46 × 10^12 km = 7.6×10^13 km
