the distance between the objects in the solar system is so much that if we measure it in normal scale it will be literally impossible .so scientists measure distance with accordance to the speed of light . this distance is measured by the thought that how much time will it take for light to travel that particular distance .

when you say that all star is 8 light years away from the Earth you mean that it will take 8 years for light to travel the distance between the star and the sun .
