Why is the distance between stars expressed light years what do you understand by the statement that a star is eight light year away?

this is because distance of star from earth is very much so it is expressed in the light year. it is defined as distance travel by light in 1 year. because speed of light is very fast I.e 300000km/s

if star is eight light year away this mean distance travel by light in 8 years

If we say that a star is eight light years away from Earth, it means that the light from star will reach the Earth in eight years.
