As the by-products obtained are chlor for chlorine and alkali for sodium hydroxide it is called as chlor alkali process.

Explanation:

  • When a concentrated solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed,  and the by-products we will obtain are chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide solution which is alkaline in nature.
  • Initially, at the cathode, we will obtain Hydrogen gas and at the anode, we will obtain Chlorine gas.
  • Later the sodium hydroxide solution will be obtained as a product.
  • As the products obtained in this process are chlorine and sodium hydroxide so we named this process as Chlor alkali process.

       2Nacl+2H_2O \rightarrow 2NaOH+2Cl_2+2H_2.
