As the by-products obtained are chlor for chlorine and alkali for sodium hydroxide it is called as chlor alkali process.
Explanation:
- When a concentrated solution of sodium chloride is electrolysed, and the by-products we will obtain are chlorine gas and sodium hydroxide solution which is alkaline in nature.
- Initially, at the cathode, we will obtain Hydrogen gas and at the anode, we will obtain Chlorine gas.
- Later the sodium hydroxide solution will be obtained as a product.
- As the products obtained in this process are chlorine and sodium hydroxide so we named this process as Chlor alkali process.
