the atom has 4 shells nemely K,L,M,N
K shall capacity is only 2 electron,
L shell capacity is8 and M and N shell is 18 and 36 but we commonly use in 3shell is only 8 electron. lets take it example calcium which have 20 atomic number.and its electronic configration is 2,8,8,2.
therefore its valency is 2 and its empty space is 6. Hope it will help u....
