why is the foundation of a building wider than its wall?

Force acting on small area exerts large pressure and the force acting on the large area exerts less pressure.
The foundation of the building holds the whole weight of it. We make it wide so that the force applied by the building wouldn’t exert much pressure on earth.

Because due the bigger area, it holds the whole weight of the building  and provides less pressure
