Why is the frog referred to as heartless in Vikram Seth poem the frog and the nightingale

Frog referred as the heart less in the prose " The frog and the nightingale " as the frog was selfish and was the reason for the death of the nightingale.
Frog thought nightingale as his enemy and wanna kill it as soon a possible so that it can sing song without any disturbance or competition.

Because if frogs cruel mentality , it was described as a heartless animal in the prose.
