Guard cells regulate opening and closing of stomata.

Number of stomata is greater on lower side or abaxial surface of dicot leaf to prevent photoxidation of chlorophyll.

Guard cells are the cells surrounding the stomatal pore in the stomatal apperture which regulate the opening and closing of stomata .

The number of stomata is more on the lower side i.e. abaxial surface of leaf than upper or adaxial surface to check the amount of water loss during transpiration i.e. to prevent excess loss of water through transpiration.
