This experiment is conducted to prove that there is the presence of starch in the leaves which the leaves prepares.

The test tube is not heated directly because ethanol is flammable so there is a chance of catching fire. That's why gauze is used.

After this step you have to take the leaf carefully from the test tube and spread the leaf in a petridish and add a few drops of iodine / betadine solution on it. The presence of starch will be indicated by a bluish black colour.
