Why is the IDL not a straight line like like the 180 meridian way

WITH SAME EXCEPTION 180° MERIDIAN PASSES MAXIMUM OVER THE WATER PART OCEAN. HENCE, 180° MERIDIAN WAS USED TO DRAW THE IDL.
