The image of the engine is evoked by the poet as an engine is a source of providing energy which enables the machines to run. The energy of the bird has been compared with that of a machine as she is also a source of providing energy to her family. The bird is the engine of her family who helps her family to run and survive. As without the engine any machine cannot work, in the same way, the family of the bird cannot live without the bird.
