The main reason why the Indus Valley Civilization is also known as the Harappan Civilization is that the first excavation of this civilization took place in a place near a city called Harappa. It was discovered in the year 1826 however, the excavation at this site first took place in the years between 1920 and 1921 by ASI under the leadership of Rai Bahadur Daya Ram Sahni. Thus it is known as the Harappan Civilization.
