Answer:

IRON IS RUSTING BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF MOISTURE IN THE ATMOSPHERE.THIS HAPPENS VERY QUICKLY AT THE COASTAL AREAS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH PRESENCE OF MOISTURE.

IRON RUSTS WHEN IT IS EXPOSED TO WATER AND OXYGEN PRESENT IN THE ATMOSPHERE.DUE TO THIS THE METALS FORM A THIN LAYER WHICH IS CALLED AS RUST

Iron Rusting ! How Do Iron Rust :---

☙Iron Corrodes easily when exposed to moisture and gets covered with a brown flaky substance called Rust.

This is also called Rusting of Iron.

☙The rust is a hydrated iron (III) oxide, Fe2O3.2H2O.

☙Rusting is an oxidation process in which iron metal is slowly oxidised by the action of air (in the presence of water).

☙Therefore, rusting of iron takes place under the following conditions :-

  • ☙Presence of air (or oxygen).
  • ☙Presence of water (Moisture).

It has observed that :-

☙The presence of impurities in the metal speed up the rusting process. Therefore, pure iron does not rust.

☙The presence of electrolytes in water also speed up the process of rusting. Therefore, the rusting of iron in water (containing sodium chloride) occurs quicker than in distilled water.

☙The position of metal in the electrochemical series determines the extent of Corrosion. More the reactivity of the metal, the more will be the possibility of the metal getting corroded.
