The very word 'knife' (whose 'k' dates from Old to middle English and was pronounced back then) has a mute 'e' at the end - so why not discard that too? It's a remnant of the Norman French dominance of official English from 1066 to the 15th century. It does have a function though - it lengthens the previous 'i'.
