Why is the lettering on the front of some vehicles” backward”?

They do this because when you see the vehicle through your rearview mirror the word appears normal and then you are absolutely certain about what is behind you.

Answer:

This is done so that the vehicle in front of it will be able to read it the correct way through the rearview mirror. Since it is a plane mirror, the image formed will be laterally inverted. So the "backward" lettering will be read properly when the driver looks through his rearview mirror.
