A plucked wire has a small surface area so the amount of vibration released in the air by the string is less and hence amplitude of the sound is less, so the loudness is less. But when it is attached to a box or a hollow body the string forces the body of the box to vibrate. The box now vibrates at the same natural frequency of the string. Now vibration of the box also forces the air molecules inside the box to vibrate at the same frequency as the string. This results in a large surface area of vibration compared to the single string and thus it increases the amplitude of the sound. This in turn results in the increase of loudness of the sound.
