The pollutants, ie, oxides of sulphur and nitrogen are very less in a gas power plant in comparison to a coal plant of equal capacity ( Remember coal plants are of huge capacity than gas turbines, usually). So the stalk height required for gas turbines are less(60–70m), which enables them to use steel chimneys. For coal fired plants environmental norms make them to build tall chimneys ( 170–200m) which can only be built using concrete structures.
