why is the metal covering of an electrical appliance earthed?

Electrical appliances are earthed with metal covering for safety purposes. Many electrical appliances, such as ovens, cooking ranges and refrigerators have metal casings. If a live wire inside the unit touches the metal case, it may induce a serious electrical shock. Proper grounding reduces such dangers.

so if we touch the electrical appliances we can't get any electrical shock. if it is not earthed then there are chances of getting electrical shock. because of earthing charge is transferred and we don't get any electrical shock.
