मानसून मूलतः हिन्द महासागर एवं अरब सागर की ओर से भारत के दक्षिण-पश्चिम तट पर आनी वाली हवाओं को कहते हैं जो भारत, पाकिस्तान, बांग्लादेश आदि में भारी वर्षा करातीं हैं। ये ऐसी मौसमी पवन होती हैं, जो दक्षिणी एशियाक्षेत्र में जून से सितंबर तक, प्रायः चार माह सक्रिय रहती है। इस शब्द का प्रथम प्रयोग ब्रिटिश भारत में (वर्तमान भारत, पाकिस्तान एवं बांग्लादेश) एवं पड़ोसी देशों के संदर्भ में किया गया था। ये बंगाल की खाड़ी और अरब सागर से चलने वाली बड़ी मौसमी हवाओं के लिये प्रयोग हुआ था, जो दक्षिण-पश्चिम से चलकर इस क्षेत्र में भारी वर्षाएं लाती थीं।[1]हाइड्रोलोजी में मानसून का व्यापक अर्थ है- कोई भी ऐसी पवन जो किसी क्षेत्र में किसी ऋतु-विशेष में ही अधिकांश वर्षा कराती है। [2][3] यहां ये उल्लेखनीय है, कि मॉनसून हवाओं का अर्थ अधिकांश समय वर्षा कराने से नहीं लिया जाना चाहिये। इस परिभाषा की दृष्टि से संसार के अन्य क्षेत्र, जैसे- उत्तरी अमेरिका, दक्षिणी अमेरिका, उप-सहारा अफ़्रीका, आस्ट्रेलिया एवं पूर्वी एशिया को भी मानसून क्षेत्र की श्रेणी में रखा जा सकता है। ये शब्द हिन्दी व उर्दु के मौसम शब्द का अपभ्रंश है। मॉनसून पूरी तरह से हवाओं के बहाव पर निर्भर करता है। आम हवाएं जब अपनी दिशा बदल लेती हैं तब मॉनसून आता है।.[4] जब ये ठंडे से गर्म क्षेत्रों की तरफ बहती हैं तो उनमें नमी की मात्र बढ़ जाती है जिसके कारण वर्षा होती है।
